So, I'm sure you all remember how I said I would be blagging more.
Yeah, that didn't work out so well, did it.
Well, here's an update of sorts!
Things have been going well here in Iceland, save for this weird combination illness and circadian arrhythmia that I've picked up - I am totally exhausted when I wake up before 2pm, nap in the middle of the day, and stay up until 7:30am. It would be awesome if I didn't, you know, have classes or a thesis to work on. However, I'm Ironmanning it today, and hopefully that will fix things.
Insofar as adventures go, I've not had many this term - not much opportunity with Hana and Siobhan off gallivanting, but fortunately they've both returned, and adventure may be yet had ere I leave the Island!
What have I been doing in the meantime? Well, that's actually related to the clip from Adventure Time I posted up there. I've been cooking. Not a whole lot, but there have been some hits (like the Bacon Swiss Roll Cake!) and some...misses, to be polite (like the Skyramisu) We've also started a Sunday Night Dinner here at Mjóstræti, which is awesome! The advantage of having housemates who a) can cook, and b) can cook for people other than themselves. Not living with Paul and Ryder does have some advantages.
Anyway, I've taken photographs of some of our concoctions for you to look at - and, of course, I will provide commentary. To save your eyes, though, I'm going to put them after a jump. Because, while I may be an absentee Blaglord, I am still a good Blaglord.
Now, without further ado, I present to you the first big meal I cooked when I made my return to Mjóstræti, the Bacon Swiss Roll Cake!
First, to make a Bacon Swiss Roll Cake, you need to make Bacon Marmalade. And to do that, you just chop up some bacon and some onions, fry 'em up until they're caramelized and crispy, then throw in some HP Sauce and some Marmalade. The result should look something like this:
Next, you take a chub of back bacon (which was in no way, shape, or form smuggled into the country) and slice it so that you can roll it back up. It should, hopefully, look like this:
Once you have your bacon roll, the next step is to put your Bacon Marmalade into it, thusly:
After that, bake it at 225° C for...however long it takes until that bacon gets good and crispy on top. Then pull it out of the oven, and slice 'er up!
Your humble Blagger, who is looking like either a Fancy Lad or a surfer from a bad 1980s movie. I'm banking on Fancy Lad, personally. |
The results are delicious, but we didn't manage to get a photo of them before they were devoured! Have a photo of me carving it up and the salads made by Katie and Elaine instead!
In our weekly meal making, I often bake bread. Because it is delicious, an essential part of a meal, and something I can't really screw up. Well, not too badly, at least.
Here is the loaf of bread I made for Katie's dinner of Spicy, Saucy Chicken accompanied by Elaine's roasted vegetable salad!
I've also made a couple of not terrible baked pasta dishes! This one is...well, they call it Gnocchi, but Nonna would murder me if I did, so I call it Guhnotchee. But yes, this is the quasi-Gnocchi, with cheese, tomatoes, hot peppers, and mushrooms:
And now mealtastrophes. They seemed like good ideas at the time!
This loaf of bread, for some reason, mutated in the oven and was raw at the bottom, despite being burnt at the top. I don't even know.
And the Skyramisu. That's a Tiramisu I attempted to make with Skyr instead of Mascarpone, because apparently you can't buy Mascarpone in Iceland. Or not at any of the stores I went to, at least. It looks decent, but...well, yeah.
So that's it, folks! Hope you're having a good time, and hopefully I'll have some adventures for you before I leave the rock!
The Bacon Cake was delicious and an absolute culinary delight ... nom nom nom :)
